Tragedy struck a wedding party in northern Iraq as a devastating fire claimed the lives of more than 100 individuals on Tuesday, leaving an additional 150 injured, as reported by The Associated Press.
The incident occurred in a town just outside Mosul, an area predominantly inhabited by Christians. This heartbreaking event was captured on video, displaying the wedding venue being engulfed in flames, with the aftermath revealing a scene of ash and twisted metal.
Efforts are currently underway to extend relief to those affected by this unfortunate accident, according to Saif al-Badr, the Health Ministry spokesman, as reported by the state-run Iraqi News Agency.
At present, the cause of the fire remains unknown. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani responded to the tragedy by launching an investigation, as stated by his office in an online statement.
Local media and civil defense officials have put forth the theory that the fire may have been sparked by fireworks, igniting highly flammable cladding within the building.
“The utilization of cheap, inflammable building materials is suspected to have led to the collapse of sections of the hall mere minutes after the fire started,” an official quoted by the Iraqi News Agency informed the AP.
