Tragic Incident: Deadly Suicide Bombing Rocks Northern Afghanistan’s Shiite Mosque, Leaving 7 Dead and 15 Injured

A suicide bomber detonated himself amidst worshippers attending Friday prayers at a Shiite mosque in northern Afghanistan, resulting in the deaths of at least seven individuals and injuring 15 others, according to a police spokesperson.

The incident occurred in the city of Pol-e-Khomri, the capital of Baghlan province, as stated by police spokesman Sher Ahmad Borhani. Authorities are currently investigating how the attacker managed to access the area and target the Imam Zaman mosque.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack at this time, although the Islamic State group is likely to be held accountable as they have carried out large-scale attacks in the past against Afghanistan’s minority Shiites.

Following the Taliban’s rise to power in August 2021, the regional IS affiliate, known as the Islamic State in Khorasan Province, escalated its assaults on mosques and minority groups across Afghanistan.

IS, which has been active in Afghanistan since 2014, is regarded as the primary security threat faced by the country’s Taliban rulers. Subsequent to assuming control, the Taliban launched an extensive crackdown against this militant organization.
