Tragic Fire Claims Lives of Over 56 as 9-Story Apartment Complex Engulfed in Vietnam’s Capital, Hanoi

A devastating fire in Vietnam’s capital has claimed the lives of at least 56 people, including four children, and left 37 injured, according to authorities. The fire broke out shortly before midnight in a nine-story apartment building that housed around 150 residents. Although firefighters were able to control the blaze, the building’s location at the end of a narrow alley made rescue operations extremely challenging. Numerous individuals were trapped inside the building until sunrise, as reported by state media.

Among the 56 confirmed fatalities, 39 victims have been identified by the police, according to Hanoi police as reported by state-owned Viet Nam News. State-owned national television channel VTV announced that four children were among the deceased. Initial reports on the death toll were unclear due to the injured and deceased being taken to different hospitals throughout the city.

Many of those being treated at hospitals suffered from smoke inhalation and injuries sustained while trying to escape the building in desperate conditions. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire, which originated in the building’s parking area. The building lacked an emergency exit, further complicating the situation. The police have taken the building’s owner into custody as part of their investigation.

The building in question is known as a ‘tube house,’ a multi-story structure that is narrow in width. It housed families and students. Images of the building reveal charred walls and damaged wires, evidence of the intense heat. Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh visited the site and offered condolences to the victims’ families. He emphasized the importance of learning from this tragedy to enhance fire prevention and firefighting measures, stressing the need for strict adherence to regulations to prevent similar incidents from occurring. Last year, a fire at a karaoke parlor in Binh Duong province in southern Vietnam claimed the lives of 32 individuals.
