Tragic Bus Crash Near Venice, Italy Claims Lives of 21, Including Ukrainian Tourists

A Tragic Accident: 21 Killed and 18 Injured in Fiery Bus Crash in Mestre, Italy

In a devastating incident near the Venetian Lagoon, at least 21 people lost their lives and 18 others were injured. The bus, carrying foreign tourists, including Ukrainians, crashed and caught fire as it fell from an elevated street. Emergency responders, including Venice firefighters, worked tirelessly to rescue survivors and extinguish the flames.

“The people in the bus found themselves surrounded by flames,” said Mauro Luongo, commander of the Venice firefighters team. “The scene we found was terrible. It took about one hour to extract some of the bodies.”

The city of Venice is now in a state of mourning, as declared by Mayor Luigi Brugnaro on X. The crash scene was described as “apocalyptic” by the Mayor.

According to Renato Boraso, a Venice city official, four of the injured individuals are in serious condition. Among the casualties, two were children, stated Venice prefect Michele Di Bari. The injured victims have been transferred to different hospitals in the region for medical treatment.

The exact cause of the accident remains uncertain, as stated by Luca Zaia, the Veneto region governor. He expressed his condolences and highlighted the complexity of understanding how this tragedy occurred. The bus involved in the crash was new and electric, and the street where the accident happened was not known to pose significant problems.

This incident is not the first of its kind in Italy. In 2017, a bus carrying Hungarian students met a fatal accident near Verona, claiming 16 lives. Additionally, in 2013, one of Italy’s worst vehicle accidents took place when a bus plunged off a viaduct near Avellino, resulting in 40 fatalities.
