Top List: Vienna, Copenhagen, and Melbourne

Vienna, Austria has once again been named the best city to live in globally, according to the latest report from the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). The EIU’s Global Liveability Index 2023 attributes Vienna’s success to its exceptional combination of stability, culture, entertainment, infrastructure, education, and health services. This ranking has been consistently held by Vienna in recent years, with the only exception being the Covid-19 pandemic.

Copenhagen, Denmark also maintains its position as the second most livable city in the world. Meanwhile, Sydney and Melbourne in Australia have entered the top five cities.

The EIU highlights that Asia-Pacific cities have made significant strides in this year’s ranking, with eight out of the top 10 movers. The region has experienced a shift towards normalcy following the pandemic. Notably, Wellington in New Zealand has climbed 35 spots to 23rd place, and Auckland has moved up 25 spots to secure the 10th position. Hong Kong has also risen 13 places to become the 61st most livable city.

Achievements in education and healthcare scores have also been observed in developing economies across Asia and the Middle East. The report notes that education has become stronger with the return of children to schools and reduced burdens on hospitals and healthcare systems.

While there have been improvements in healthcare, education, infrastructure, and culture and entertainment scores, stability has marginally declined, explains the EIU. Instances of civil unrest, cost-of-living crises, and an increase in crime rates have affected stability scores. Cities in Western Europe, including Frankfurt in Germany and Amsterdam in the Netherlands, have slipped in rankings due to a failure to match the gains made by cities in Asia and the Middle East.

Overall, the EIU’s annual report rates 172 cities based on stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. The index reached a 15-year high last year as the world recovered from the pandemic, with an average score of 76.2 out of 100.
