Top engineers earn hefty salaries according to leaked Google Pay data

An exclusive internal spreadsheet from Google containing salary data for over 12,000 employees based in the US in 2022 has been leaked to Insider. The leaked document reveals that software engineers are the highest earners at the tech giant, with base salaries of $718,000. Google uses a tier-based system with levels two through 11 to determine base salaries for its employees. The leaked spreadsheet only included data up to level seven employees, showing that level seven software engineers earned an annual salary of $718,000, excluding bonuses and stock. The document also revealed that software engineers received the highest annual bonuses, amounting to $605,000. This means that a software engineer could potentially earn around $1.3 million per year. According to SmartAsset, these high-earning software engineers rank in the top 1% of earners in the country. Lower-ranking software engineers on the spreadsheet reported salaries ranging from $100,000 to $375,000.

After software engineers, engineering managers were the second highest-paid employees at Google, earning base salaries of $400,000. They were followed by enterprise direct sales workers, earning $377,000 per year. Legal corporate counsel and sales team members had base salaries of $320,000. Other roles that earned at least $300,000 included user experience designers, government affairs and public policy workers, research scientists, cloud salespeople, and program managers. The average compensation for full-time US-based Google employees in 2022 was reported to be $279,802. The lowest-paid employees at Google were technical operations staff, starting with base salaries of $47,000, which is $1,000 less than what technical interns earn at the company. Data scientists fell in the middle range, with base salaries ranging from $120,000 to $254,000. However, they ranked second in terms of potential bonuses, indicating that data scientists could receive up to $326,000 in additional pay per year.

Despite Google’s generous compensation packages, none can match the staggering total compensation earned by Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, who reportedly earned $226 million in 2022. Pichai’s base salary was $2 million, with an additional $218 million coming from stock awards and $6 million from “other compensation,” possibly related to retirement plans and the personal use of company aircraft. It is worth noting that Pichai earned over 800 times the median employee’s pay, despite recent layoffs and the reduction of employee perks.

In 2022, Alphabet reported a total revenue of $282.8 billion, according to an SEC filing. However, weeks into 2023, the company laid off 12,000 employees. The layoff announcement was made by Pichai, who stated that the cuts would take effect immediately for US-based employees and would follow local laws and practices for employees in other countries. The mass layoffs received significant backlash from Google employees, with many feeling disposable and questioning the value placed on work. Axed workers reportedly received 16 weeks of severance pay, along with additional weeks based on their years of service at Google. The layoffs were implemented due to the rapid growth of Alphabet’s workforce during the pandemic, which reached nearly 187,000 people by the end of 2022, up from 119,000 in 2019, according to regulatory filings.
