Teen’s Ill-conceived Scheme to Get Friend Out of Work Goes Horribly Wrong

According to Reuters, a 19-year-old man from Missouri executed a plan to help his friend avoid going to work, but it resulted in the evacuation and shutdown of Ford’s assembly plant in Claycomo, near Kansas City. The incident occurred on Tuesday night when a caller claimed to be trapped in a second-floor bathroom with firearms and explosives. If found guilty of making a terroristic threat, the suspect named Zachariah Peterson could face up to seven years in prison and a fine of $10,000. Authorities spent six hours searching the facility and evacuated around 2,200 workers.

KSHB reports that Clay County Prosecuting Attorney Zachary Thompson revealed that Peterson made a “swatting” call to get his friend off work. However, it is unclear if the friend was aware of the plan. Thompson emphasized the seriousness of this crime and the disruption it causes to law enforcement and community safety. Police officers entered the plant to investigate the threat in what he described as a heroic act. Peterson claimed to have an AK-47, three spare magazines, and a pound of C4 explosive attached to his chest.

The Kansas City Star reports that Anderson admitted to downloading an app to hide his phone number. He also mentioned being familiar with C4 from playing Call of Duty. Clay County Sheriff Will Akin commented on the strain this hoax placed on law enforcement and the financial loss incurred by Ford due to production shutdown. Peterson, speaking at a court appearance, pleaded not guilty, claiming he was forced to make the call. Swatting incidents like this one continue to cause concern. (Read more swatting stories.)
