Top Automakers Declaring No Petrol or Diesel Models by 2030 – Find Out Who!

The Prime Minister Delays Ban on Petrol and Diesel Cars to 2035

In a surprising move, the Prime Minister has announced that the ban on sales of new petrol and diesel cars will be pushed back to 2035 instead of the initially proposed 2030 deadline. While this decision may be celebrated by many drivers who want to purchase vehicles with internal combustion engines (ICE), not all car brands will be affected.

Several car manufacturers have already committed to transitioning to electric vehicles (EVs) and pulling out of selling petrol and diesel cars by 2030 or even earlier. However, with the Government’s recent postponement, one can wonder if these brands will alter their plans.

As Rishi Sunak addressed the nation’s net zero strategy, he confirmed the easing of the transition to electric vehicles. He stated, “You’ll still be able to buy petrol and diesel cars and vans until 2035. Even after that, you will still be able to buy and sell them second hand.”

Although this decision dilutes the targets set by Boris Johnson three years ago, it aligns the UK with the European Union (EU), which has set a similar deadline for the end of new petrol and diesel car sales by the mid-2030s. This consistency will provide vehicle manufacturers with a clear target for increasing EV production.

Nevertheless, numerous major brands have already made plans to discontinue the production of fossil fuel cars, some even well before the end of the decade. Here are a few examples of car brands that have committed to selling only electric cars from 2030:

ALFA ROMEO

Alfa Romeo aims to reveal its first fully electric car next year, and by 2027, it plans to have its entire lineup powered by battery. Currently, it offers the Tonale plug-in hybrid as its only electrified model. From 2025, Alfa Romeo intends to launch solely pure-electric models, making it three years ahead of its sister brands in the Stellantis group.

BENTLEY

Bentley has already declared its intention to become a fully electric car maker by 2030. In 2025, the luxury British brand will release its first all-electric model. This shift marks a significant change for Bentley, as it ends a 111-year history of producing cars with petrol engines.

CITROEN

Citroen, along with other Stellantis group car makers, will exclusively launch fully electric models from 2026 onwards. While Citroen has not specified when it will stop selling EVs, it will likely align with the group’s goal of 2030.

CUPRA

Cupra, a sporty spin-off brand of Seat, currently offers one fully electric model, the Born hatchback. However, its CEO has expressed the ambition to transform Cupra into a fully electric brand by 2030.

DS AUTOMOBILES

DS Automobiles plans to shift to a fully electric brand globally by 2024, earlier than other manufacturers under the Stellantis group. The DS3 E-Tense is currently the brand’s only electric car, with more EVs to follow.

FIAT

Fiat will bid farewell to petrol and diesel engines by 2030, phasing out combustion-engined models in its lineup from 2025. The brand’s focus will shift to electric vehicles, initially led by the popular Fiat 500, which is already available in electric form.

FORD

Ford announced that its entire passenger vehicle lineup in Europe will be electric or plug-in hybrid by mid-2026 and all-electric only by 2030. The Mustang Mach-E and Explorer SUV are among the first electric models from Ford, and the manufacturer has already begun selling electric Transit vans in the UK.

GENESIS

Genesis, the luxury division of Hyundai, plans to launch only electric models from 2025.

With these commitments from major car brands, the transition to electric vehicles is well underway, and the Government’s decision to delay the ban on petrol and diesel cars to 2035 further raises the question of whether these brands will adjust their plans for the future.
