Top and Bottom US Cities in Terms of Safety


Community safety “comes in many forms,” according to WalletHub. It includes avoiding mass shootings, natural disasters, and car accidents, as well as having health insurance, financial security, and avoiding questionable websites. WalletHub conducted a study on over 180 of the largest cities in the United States to determine which ones are the safest. They used more than thirty metrics across three main categories: home and community safety, natural disaster risk, and financial safety. The city of Nashua in New Hampshire emerged as the safest city on WalletHub’s list, while St. Louis ranked the lowest. Here are the top and bottom 10 cities according to the study:

  1. Nashua, New Hampshire
  2. Columbia, Maryland (No. 1 in the “Home and Community Safety” category)
  3. South Burlington, Vermont (No. 1 in the “Financial Safety” category)
  4. Gilbert, Arizona
  5. Warwick, Rhode Island
  6. Portland, Maine
  7. Casper, Wyoming
  8. Yonkers, New York
  9. Burlington, Vermont
  10. Scottsdale, Arizona

Least safe cities

  1. Washington, DC
  2. Los Angeles
  3. Oklahoma City
  4. Memphis, Tennessee (last in the “Financial Safety” category)
  5. Oakland, California
  6. Detroit
  7. Baton Rouge (last in the “Home and Community Safety” category)
  8. San Bernardino, California
  9. Fort Lauderdale, Florida
  10. St. Louis
