Daniel Jones walked off the field early in the fourth quarter, knowing his day was over as he received a prompt diagnosis of a neck injury.
For the New York Giants, this season has been a terrible start. Sunday’s game only made things worse. Now, all attention turns to Monday, as Jones is scheduled for further tests on his neck—a sobering reminder of the neck injury that kept him out of the last six games in 2021.
On Sunday, Jones had X-rays and stated that he is set to undergo imaging tests on Monday to determine the extent of the injury.
The Giants lost their starting quarterback after he endured another round of punishing hits in their 31-16 loss to the Miami Dolphins. Jones was sacked six times and hit numerous other times throughout the game.
“I don’t know exactly what it is yet,” Jones said. “We’ll know more tomorrow.”
The Giants are without their star running back and over half of their expected starting offensive line, making it no surprise that this season is slipping away fast. New York is now 1-4 on the season.
This marks the fifth time in the past seven seasons that the Giants have started 1-4 or worse. No Giants team has ever made the playoffs after such a start, leaving their season uncertain. Their inability to score or provide enough protection for Jones and the offense raises doubts about the team’s future.
“We have a lot of talented guys with the right mindset,” Giants coach Brian Daboll said. “However, we haven’t been able to achieve the results we’re looking for. It’s certainly disappointing to lose, but we need to go back, analyze the situation, and move on.”
The Giants are struggling due to injuries. Running back Saquon Barkley has been out for three consecutive games with an ankle injury, and the offensive line has seen four different starting combinations this season. The Miami Dolphins, leading the AFC East, exposed New York’s sluggishness, with Tyreek Hill making two catches of at least 64 yards and De’Von Achane scoring on a 76-yard rush that made the Giants’ defense appear motionless.
However, the offensive line is perhaps the biggest issue. Multiple injuries have forced New York to use its fourth different lineup this season. Jones faced continuous pressure; to his credit, he fought hard, completing 14 of 20 passes for 119 yards without any interceptions. The Giants, on the other hand, allowed seven sacks, bringing their total to 30 sacks allowed in just five games—tying the second-highest number in NFL history. Even backup Tyrod Taylor took a couple of punishing hits after replacing Jones, but managed to finish the game.
There were also no touchdown passes, which is becoming a concerning trend for the Giants. This season, they scored their first touchdown before halftime—a score by Jason Pinnock, a defensive player.
Out of all the alarming statistics about the Giants’ offense through five games, one stands out: thanks to Pinnock’s 102-yard interception return, the team’s defense has scored more first-half touchdowns (one) than the offense (zero).
“We need to improve in all areas,” Daboll acknowledged.
Meanwhile, the Dolphins capitalized on big plays to accumulate points and delivered significant hits to worsen New York’s woes.
Taylor took over in the final 12 minutes after Jones exited, and he is likely to start if Jones is unable to play. However, regardless of who is under center, the Giants are far from an offensive powerhouse.
The Giants have not scored a first-quarter touchdown in their last 12 games, dating back to last season.
To put it into perspective, Miami had more first-quarter points on Sunday (seven) than the Giants have had in their past 12 first quarters (six).
Now, the Giants may have to face the prospect of playing without their starting quarterback. It has quickly turned from bad to worse.
“We’ve played physical games against tough defenses,” Jones said. “We can all feel it. It’s all part of the game.”
