Experience a Taste of Spain: Two Restaurants That Transport You to Spain, Even for Just One Meal

Can’t make it to Spain this summer? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. I know of two incredible restaurants that can bring the flavors of Spain to you, even if it’s just for one meal. Ready for a road trip? Let me introduce you to these two hidden gems, one of which is worth the wait.

Vera Restaurant seamlessly combines two cuisines, resulting in a truly unique dining experience. Whether you’re in the mood for authentic Vietnamese dishes or a juicy steak that won’t break the bank, Vera has it all. Indulge in their delectable menu and let me guide you to some of my favorite dishes.

If you’re a fan of soup, then 84 is the dish for you. This family-run Vietnamese restaurant in Eden Center serves a delightful soup made with catfish, okra, cilantro, and juicy pineapple chunks. The sweet and sour broth, infused with tamarind, is a true delight. And if noodles are your craving, you can’t go wrong with 51. Their vermicelli noodles are topped with pickled radish, shrimp, charred pork, cucumber, and mint. The server will guide you to add fish sauce, resulting in a perfect combination of flavors and textures. If you’re feeling adventurous, don’t miss their smoky stir-fried jumble of chopped baby clams, onions, and Vietnamese coriander, served with rice crackers. Just say “9” and it’s yours.

Amtrak’s first-class dining experience gets a makeover with the Stephen Starr menu. The pandemic may have caused some changes, but Rice Paper, which opened in 2012, continues to offer an abundance of mouthwatering dishes. Although the menu has been trimmed down, there are still nearly 100 options to choose from. While some dishes may no longer be available, the lemongrass chicken remains a favorite among customers. Rice Paper’s cozy dining room, adorned with aqua booths, lemongrass-colored tables, brick walls, and well-deserved accolades, creates the perfect ambiance for a memorable dining experience. The friendly staff is always ready to make recommendations and ensure your meal is perfect. Take a tip from me, visit between 3 to 5 p.m. on weekdays to beat the crowd.

Charley Prime Foods, the latest venture from renowned restaurateurs Jackie Greenbaum and Gordon Banks, has something for everyone. Whether you’re planning a romantic date night, a family gathering, or simply looking for a new culinary adventure, this restaurant has it all. An elevated version of Bar Charley in Washington, Charley Prime Foods incorporates elements from all the owners’ other successful establishments. With a dining room that stands out from the crowd, adorned with flowery wallpaper, Greenbaum’s own artwork, forest-green booths, and a raised bar, you’ll feel right at home. And let’s not forget the highlight – more than half the seats overlook a beautiful waterfront view.

Prepare your taste buds for stumps of crispy sticky rice topped with shredded roast pork, finished with Korean barbecue sauce, or indulge in a picture-perfect salad aptly named “Ode to Spago.” This salad combines cabbage, wonton crisps, coconut milk and lemongrass-poached chicken for a truly delightful fusion of flavors. The menu offers a diverse selection without overwhelming you. From roasted salmon to chicken Milanese, Charley Prime Foods covers all the bases. And if you’re a steak enthusiast, you’re in for a treat. With cuts for every budget, their “Here’s the Beef” section is sure to satisfy your cravings. Don’t forget to pair your meal with one of their fantastic drink options. Great drinks at fair prices always draw a crowd.

Looking for a taste of Maryland’s famous seafood? The Crab Claw is the place to go. Set against the picturesque St. Michaels Harbor, this iconic seafood restaurant never fails to impress. Arriving early is highly recommended so as not to miss out on their famous lump crab cakes, crab imperial, and steamed hard-shell blue crabs. With a seating capacity of 350, and as many as 1,200 customers served on Saturdays, securing a spot can be a challenge. The Crab Claw has a rich history, with Tracey Jones Wass’s parents putting St. Michaels on the map when they opened the restaurant in 1965. The dining experience is enhanced by the friendly and efficient servers, the vibrant atmosphere, and the mouthwatering aroma of seafood. The food lives up to expectations, with Maryland crab soup highlighting the sweet flavors of the region. And of course, the crab cakes are a must-try, served in a soft potato bun with fresh coleslaw and perfectly crispy fries. If you’re in the mood for a true seafood feast, don’t miss their treasure chest of steamed spiced shrimp, mussels, and oysters, accompanied by boiled potatoes, corn on the cob, and drawn butter. The perfect picnic by the bay.

Jaleo by José Andrés is a Spanish oasis that has been delighting diners for 30 years. As you enter, you’re immediately immersed in a vibrant fiesta, with unique decor, including a masked bull head near the bar. The multiple menus offer a plethora of drink and tapas options, which can be overwhelming. To narrow it down, I asked the renowned chef-humanitarian José Andrés to recommend three must-try tapas dishes. First on his list is the gazpacho, a refreshing cold soup made with his wife’s recipe, infused with sherry and served with minced cucumbers and green peppers. Next up is the garlic shrimp, delicately sauteed seafood with a hint of chile de árbol for an extra kick. And finally, the simple yet divine pan de cristal imported from Barcelona, topped with crushed beefsteak tomato. However, my personal recommendation is the sliced apple, fennel, and manchego salad, which offers a refreshing contrast to the hot and rich tapas. And of course, anything with ham is a winner, especially the little pork patties with piquillo peppers.

You don’t need to travel to Spain to experience the flavors and atmosphere of this beautiful country. These two Spanish-inspired restaurants will transport you to Spain, even if it’s just for one meal. So why wait? Embark on a culinary journey and satisfy your cravings for Spanish cuisine.
