Tina Turner’s Iconic Outfits Take Center Stage in V&A’s Diva Exhibition

Tina Turner’s larger-than-life persona continued until the end, according to her friend and fashion designer, Bob Mackie. Mackie, who collaborated on Turner’s most iconic looks, made this statement ahead of the launch of the Diva fashion exhibition at the V&A in London. The exhibition features Turner prominently and Mackie was asked to compare today’s divas with those of the past. However, the 83-year-old designer seemed unimpressed, pointing out that Beyoncé’s early stage costumes were made by her mother, who often referenced Mackie’s work with Cher. Mackie expressed his indifference towards the fashion of today’s divas, stating that it does not showcase their talent and likening it to “Naomi Campbell doing a nightclub act.” One of the exhibition’s highlights is the Flame dress designed by Mackie for Turner in 1977. Mackie described it as a “cavewoman dress” that showcased Turner’s best asset, her body. Diva, the exhibition, celebrates and reclaims the word “diva” by showcasing the evolution of the term from meaning “goddess” to being used as a critique for individuals who confidently take up space and make their presence felt. The exhibition provides an immersive experience for visitors, with headsets that switch tracks depending on the display they are closest to, featuring performances from Maria Callas and Rihanna. The exhibition also features risque costumes worn by Josephine Baker and showcases Mackie’s influence on the naked dress trend. Mackie believes the key to the trend’s success lies in finding the right balance between nudity and allure. The exhibition includes displays dedicated to celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, Cher, Amy Winehouse, Rihanna, and Lizzo, highlighting their bold and iconic fashion choices.
