Thunder-like Sound from Cheese Collapse Proves Deadly

Tragedy struck in northern Italy as Giacomo Chiapparini, a revered cheesemaker, lost his life on Sunday night. The 74-year-old was crushed under thousands of wheels of his own product when a shelf broke in a cheese warehouse in the Lombardy region. This unfortunate event set off a chain reaction causing approximately 25,000 wheels of hard cheese to plummet to the ground. Weighing 84 pounds each, these wheels were of the Parmesan-like Grana Padano cheese variety. The storage shelves were as high as 33 feet, and witnesses described the collapse as sounding like thunder.

The search for Chiapparini lasted throughout the night, with about 20 firefighters from nearby communities manually moving the wheels of cheese in their efforts. His body was eventually found on Monday morning. Chiapparini’s family business had been producing Grana Padano since 2006, and it was one of the largest in the region. Stefano Berni, the director general of the Grana Padano Consortium of producers, expressed condolences, stating, “Poor Giacomo was so unlucky.” Berni described the incident as a tragic fatality, noting that he couldn’t recall any similar accidents, not even during the powerful earthquake that struck the area in 2012.
