August 16 (UPI) — Tropical Storm Hilary is steadily intensifying in the Pacific, with meteorologists predicting that it will escalate into a hurricane within the next 24 hours.
While the storm currently poses no threat to land, it is the third significant weather system in the Pacific alongside Tropical Storm Greg and Hurricane Fernanda. However, both Greg and Fernanda are expected to weaken in the coming days.
The National Hurricane Center, in its 4 p.m. EDT advisory, indicated that Hilary is approximately 370 miles away from Manzanillo, Mexico, moving west northwest at 15 mph, with sustained winds of 40 mph.
Although no coastal watches or warnings have been issued for Hilary, forecasters advise residents of Baja California Sur to monitor the storm closely as watches may be put in place later this week as the storm progresses northward along the coast.
Earlier, the NHC warned in an advisory that “large swells generated by Hilary will affect portions of the coast of southwestern Mexico and the Baja California peninsula over the next few days.”
While Tropical Storm Hilary gains strength, Tropical Storm Greg, also present in the Pacific, is anticipated to weaken.
“No significant changes are expected within the next 24 hours,” stated the NHC in an advisory, predicting “gradual weakening” for the storm.
Hurricane Fernanda in the eastern Pacific is also losing strength.
“Continued rapid weakening is forecasted over the next 48 hours, and Fernanda is likely to transition into a post-tropical remnant low within a couple of days,” the NHC explained in an advisory.
Similar to Hilary, there are currently no coastal warnings in effect for Fernanda and Greg, according to the NHC.
In May, the NHC predicted a “near-normal” hurricane season, and in June, the Climate Prediction Center announced the development of the El Nino weather phenomenon.
