Potential tropical storm Hilary poses a threat to Southern California next week, according to Orange County Register

By Brian K. Sullivan

A new weather phenomenon has emerged in the Pacific Ocean near Mexico’s coast, and it has the potential to impact Southern California in the coming week. Tropical Storm Hilary has formed, currently located about 470 miles from Manzanillo, Mexico, and moving in a west-northwest direction. It is accompanied by maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour, according to the US National Hurricane Center’s latest advisory.

The current forecast indicates that Hilary might reach Southern California as a post-tropical system by Monday, but it’s important to note that long-range forecasts are prone to inaccuracies. Samantha Camposano and Lisa Bucci, forecasters at the National Hurricane Center, suggest closely monitoring the progress of Hilary due to its potential impacts on the Baja California peninsula and parts of the southwestern United States, including Southern California. The precise location and intensity of rainfall and wind effects are still uncertain.

It’s rare for tropical systems to directly impact Southern California, as most tend to make landfall in Baja California before dissipating over Mexico or heading farther west into the Pacific Ocean. Thus far, the eastern Pacific storm season has produced a total of eight named storms, with Hilary being the latest addition. This season concludes on November 30.

The current projections indicate that Hilary could undergo further strengthening and develop into a major Category 3 hurricane with sustained winds exceeding 111 mph by Friday. However, it is expected to weaken as it nears the coasts of northern Mexico or Southern California.
