Threads Achieves Record-breaking 150 MILLION Downloads, Outpacing Competitor Twitter with Quarter of Active Users

Mark Zuckerberg’s recently launched social media platform, Threads, has experienced tremendous success in terms of user sign-ups and user activity. Its user numbers have exceeded Twitter’s, with approximately 93 million active users globally in its first week, compared to Twitter’s 353 million. This achievement further solidifies Threads’ status as a potential rival to Twitter.

The popularity of Threads is evident in its massive download numbers, with over 150 million downloads worldwide within just six days of its launch. This impressive feat has earned Threads the nickname “Twitter killer.” In comparison, it took Twitter several years to reach the same level of active users that Threads achieved in such a short time.

Threads has also surpassed its closest US rival, Truth Social, which was launched by former President Donald Trump, by a significant margin. Threads now boasts 86 times the weekly active user base of Truth Social, further establishing its dominance in the market.

Furthermore, Threads continues to attract new users at an unprecedented rate. It reached 10 million users within a few hours of its launch and accumulated a total of 109 million users worldwide by the end of its first week. These statistics were gathered from combined downloads on the iOS and Google Play platforms.

However, recent data analysis suggests that the initial excitement surrounding Threads may be fading for some early adopters. Time spent on the platform has decreased by 50% over the past week, dropping from an average of 20 minutes to just 10 minutes. This trend is also apparent among Threads’ most famous users, with only nine out of the top 20 most followed Twitter accounts creating Threads accounts and not all of them actively using the new platform.

Data from app intelligence firms, data.ai, and Sensor Tower, indicates a decline in Threads’ daily active users early last week, with a 20% decrease on Tuesday and Wednesday compared to its peak on Saturday. However, despite this decrease, Threads’ achievements in terms of total global downloads remain unparalleled. It reached 150 million downloads at a rate 5.5 times faster than the previous record holder, Pokémon Go.

India has played a significant role in Threads’ success, contributing 33% of the global total of downloads. Brazil and the United States follow as the second and third contributors, with 22% and 16% respectively. Mexico and Japan have also made notable contributions, accounting for 8% and 5% of total downloads, respectively.

While Meta faces regulatory challenges, primarily related to privacy concerns and data collection, Threads’ popularity shows no signs of slowing down. Meta has taken steps to prevent EU users from accessing the app by blocking their IP addresses through a virtual private network (VPN). Additionally, Meta has planned various updates for Threads, including compatibility with iOS 17, an edit button similar to Twitter, support for managing multiple accounts, and a following feed.

The integration of Threads with other microblogging platforms using the ActivityPub protocol, such as Mastodon, is expected to be a game-changer. It will expand Threads’ reach and capabilities, further enhancing its appeal to users.

Although user activity on Threads may have declined recently, the rapid growth it has experienced thus far is remarkable. According to data.ai, Threads’ ability to attract nearly 100 million weekly active users during its early stages is unprecedented. This achievement is a testament to its potential as a dominant social media platform.

As Meta celebrates reaching the milestone of 100 million sign-ups, Threads continues to captivate users and maintain its trajectory of success.
