S&P/TSX Composite Falls During Late Morning Trading, U.S. Stock Markets Register Gains

Canada’s main stock index experienced a decline in late-morning trading, primarily due to losses in base metal and utility stocks. Meanwhile, U.S. stock markets started the trading week on a positive note.

The S&P/TSX composite index decreased by 33.41 points to reach 20,228.66.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average increased by 64.63 points to reach 34,573.66. The S&P 500 index rose by 9.37 points to reach 4,514.79, while the Nasdaq composite increased by 67.78 points to reach 14,181.48.

The Canadian dollar traded for 75.92 cents US compared to 75.86 cents US on Friday.

The August crude contract decreased by 57 cents to reach US$74.85 per barrel, while the August natural gas contract decreased by a penny to reach US$2.53 per mmBTU.

The August gold contract was down US$9.10 at US$1,955.30 an ounce, and the September copper contract declined by nine cents to reach US$3.84 a pound.
