Americans celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day and Columbus Day on the second Monday of October each year. It is an opportunity to honor the contributions and legacy of the Indigenous peoples who inhabited America long before Christopher Columbus mistakenly claimed its discovery. In 2021, President Joe Biden officially recognized Indigenous Peoples’ Day with a proclamation acknowledging the harm caused by federal policies that aimed to assimilate and displace Native people.

While some states officially celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day, others acknowledge it through proclamations. Over 100 cities have replaced Columbus Day entirely with Indigenous Peoples’ Day. This day allows people to reflect on the true history of America and the cultures that existed before European colonization.

As the holiday approaches, some may wonder about the operating hours of various institutions.

The Federal Reserve bank holiday falls on Monday but financial markets such as Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange will still be open.

However, major banks like Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Citibank branches will be closed. Chase Bank and TD Bank will remain open to serve customers on Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

If you need banking services, online banking and ATMs are always available for your convenience.

The United States Postal Service will be closed on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, resulting in no mail or package deliveries. However, you can still rely on UPS and FedEx for most of your shipping needs. FedEx Express and FedEx Ground Economy may have modified services, while UPS will operate as usual.

Many big-box retailers, including Target, Walmart, and Kroger, will be open on Indigenous Peoples’ Day. However, it is advisable to check with local businesses for their specific operating hours.

Since it is a government holiday, various government buildings such as the DMV, libraries, courts, and offices will be closed. Take note of this when planning your activities for Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
