Bottomless Brunch Alert: Bay Area Restaurants Introduce Clean-Up Fees for Public Vomiting

Keep it Down or Pay Up! Bay Area Restaurants Implementing Vomit Fees for Brunch-Goers

In an effort to curb the excessive drinking and subsequent vomiting that has been plaguing California’s Bay Area restaurants, establishments are now implementing a “vomit fee” for patrons who can’t hold their liquor. These fees, ranging up to $50 per table, will be added to the bill of any party member who regurgitates in a public space.

One restaurant in Oakland, Kitchen Story, has prominently displayed a sign warning “mimosa lovers” of the consequences of their actions. “A $50 cleaning fee will automatically be added to your tab when you throw up in public areas. Thank you so much for understanding,” the sign reads. While they haven’t had to enforce the fee recently, co-owner Chaiporn Kitsadaviseksak said it used to be a major issue.

“It was really tough cleaning,” Kitsadaviseksak explained. “And this was happening a lot. My workers don’t want to do that… Now [customers] know they have to pay. They understand.”

Restaurateur Steven Choi echoed these sentiments, stating that they initially posted the sign during the COVID-19 pandemic due to concerns over cleaning up vomit. “But this is not unique,” Choi added. “It’s there to make the customers stop and think about other people.”

In addition to the signs, many restaurants have adopted timed seatings to prevent excessive drinking and keep tables moving efficiently. Kitchen Story allows bottomless mimosas for only 60 minutes, ensuring that guests don’t overindulge. Liz Ryan, owner of The Sycamore, explained that they haven’t displayed a sign but have implemented policies to protect guests and staff.

“Our staff is trained to make sure our customers don’t overdo it. Nobody wants to see people throwing up. That sort of spoils the party vibe that we’re trying to create,” Ryan said. The restaurant has a dedicated mimosa fairy who refills glasses and strictly enforces a two-hour maximum policy.

Ultimately, these measures aim to remind guests that they are in a public setting and should be mindful of their own behavior and its impact on others. By charging a vomit fee and implementing policies to prevent excessive drinking, Bay Area restaurants hope to create an enjoyable dining experience for all patrons.
