The Ultimate Guide: How Frequently Should You Wash Your Bras?

How Often Should You Wash Your Bras?

Although not visible, a bra plays a crucial role in supporting and smoothing out your outfit while preventing back problems. Surprisingly, many of us neglect the importance of washing our bras frequently.

So why should we wash bras? The risks of wearing a dirty bra go beyond visible dirt. Bacteria can accumulate on the bra, leading to skin infections and yeast growth, according to dermatologist Dr. Leah Ansell from New York. Furthermore, washing your bra helps remove debris such as dead skin, dirt, and sweat, says Ansell.

Laura Burke, an intimate apparel stylist and bra fit expert, explains that our body heat can alter the shape of the bra. Washing it helps it regain its natural shape and continued support. Burke also warns that exposed metal from bras, especially underwire ones, can cause allergies and dermatitis.

So, how often should you clean your bras? Burke suggests washing regular bras every three to four wears, while sports bras should be washed after each wear. Likewise, lingerie designer Nichole de Carle recommends hand-washing bras at least once a week, with more active sports bras washed more frequently.

As for the washing process, it is best to use a delicate or hand-wash cycle and place the bras in a lingerie bag to protect them. If machine-washing, hook your bras to avoid snagging, and consider doing a separate load. De Carle advises using a lower temperature and delicate program to protect the bra and save water. Air-drying bras is highly recommended to preserve their shape and elasticity.

Knowing when to replace a bra is crucial. Burke suggests donating bras after their first year, as most women tend to keep them much longer. As a guideline, she recommends moving to tighter hook and eye closures over time. When the bra no longer provides the support it used to and the band rides up, it is time to replace it. Ansell adds that any visible stains or metal poking through should also prompt a new purchase. Additionally, our changing body size and shape may necessitate purchasing new bras.

In terms of how many bras to have in your closet, Burke recommends owning a minimum of three everyday bras that can be rotated. This includes other essentials such as a strapless bra, sports bras, lounge options, and special evening bras.
