The Transformation of Chris Noth’s Scandal into Carrie’s ‘Big Mistake’ in ‘And Just Like That’

In the eighth episode of the second season of “And Just Like That,” there was a surprising moment that left viewers stunned. Carrie, swathed in a cozy sweater, confesses to Miranda about the incredible orgasms she’s been experiencing with her renewed love, Aidan. But then, she drops an even bigger bombshell. Halting their stroll, Carrie reluctantly admits, “I’ve been questioning whether Big was a monumental mistake.” This revelation left both Miranda and viewers speechless. Where did all that love for Big go?

For those unfamiliar, Big, also known as John James Preston, was the man Carrie chased after in Manhattan for six seasons of the original “Sex and the City” show. In the first episode, she fell head over heels for Big, and her pursuit of him continued throughout the series. She finally found her happily ever after with him in the finale of the 2004 season. In the premiere of “And Just Like That,” Carrie and Big were the epitome of marital bliss.

However, shortly after Big’s demise due to a Peloton accident in the 2021 premiere, the actor who portrayed him, Chris Noth, faced allegations of sexual misconduct. This shocking news tarnished the legacy of the show, as Noth had become synonymous with his character, just like Sarah Jessica Parker had with Carrie. Parker, along with Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis, who play Miranda and Charlotte, respectively, swiftly released a joint statement expressing their support for the women who came forward with the accusations. Suddenly, even the ghost of Big became problematic.

To many, Noth was Big, and for the lead character of a show that promoted female empowerment and camaraderie to have chased a man whose actor was now labeled a “sexual predator” undoubtedly marred the legacy of “SATC.” This is why the recent reunion of Carrie and Aidan, whom she controversially cheated on with Big, feels like a correction of the show’s history. There were always fans divided into Team Big and Team Aidan, but now it seems we’re expected to believe that Big was never the right man for our heroine, despite their marriage and the seemingly beautiful life they shared between “Sex and the City 2” and “And Just Like That.”

In the episode titled “A Hundred Years Ago,” where Carrie reveals her realization about Big, Miranda’s ex, Che, asks the obvious question to the writer and Aidan: “Why didn’t this work out the first time?” Carrie responds with another surprising statement, “Because I made a mistake.” All those years, emotions, and countless pairs of shoes were all part of a big mistake.

This turn of events reminded me of the famous “Dallas” do-over in 1986 when an entire season, where Patrick Duffy’s character Bobby was supposed to be dead, was rewritten as a dream. In the latest episode of “And Just Like That,” it seems like the show is steering Carrie towards a different happy ending, this time with Aidan, possibly implying another potential series finale.

However, I couldn’t help but wonder if Big was being thrown under the bus to make this shift in the storyline possible.
