The Summer Reading Selections by the National Education Association: Fostering Ideological Beliefs Rather Than Educating Children

Why did the National Education Association (NEA), the largest teachers union in the country, include explicit content on its list of recommended summer reads for educators? The NEA listed Maia Kobabe’s “Gender Queer: A Memoir” under “banned” books, likely because Florida Governor Ron DeSantis took steps to remove it from school libraries in his state. Although the book is intended for teens, it was found in elementary schools and contains graphic descriptions and drawings of sexual acts.

The NEA claims that the book’s LGBT characters were the reason for its removal from school libraries, stating on its website: “Twilight used to be at the top of banned book lists for its racy content. Today, those lists are much more likely to feature LGBTQ+ people or People of Color.” However, the truth is that organizations like the NEA are using books with LGBT characters as a means to expose children to inappropriate sexual material. While “Twilight” may have had some romantic scenes, “Gender Queer” includes explicit depictions of oral sex. They are not comparable in any way.

More than ever, teachers unions are at odds with parents. No parent wants their child to come across a book about dildos and sexting, both of which are included in “Gender Queer,” at school. In fact, during a press conference where Governor DeSantis displayed the images from the book, local news outlets had to censor the graphic content. The removal of “Gender Queer” from schools by Governor DeSantis was a response to its explicit content.

Despite this, the NEA insists on including the book on its recommended list for educators. The defense from the left is that banning these books from school libraries is pointless when children can access worse material on their phones or computers at home. However, just because children have access to inappropriate content does not mean that schools should provide it or encourage it. The NEA’s inclusion of “Gender Queer” is a deliberate attempt to do just that. Furthermore, the book is of poor literary quality and does not deserve a place among the vast array of classic and contemporary literature that children should be reading.

Reading scores in our country have seen a significant decline, possibly due to schools supplying nonsensical books like “Gender Queer” instead of focusing on quality literary works. However, the NEA displays a lack of concern for children’s reading skills. Their focus is on activism, not education. Another book on their “banned” list, “Ready Player One,” was not actually banned but rather removed from Florida middle schools due to profanity and explicit plot lines involving a sex robot.

One of the books featured on the NEA’s “Great Summer Reads for Educators” list is “Milo and Marcos at the End of the World” by Kevin Christopher Snipes. However, not every book can be included in school libraries. Why should this particular book be included?

Another book on the list, “White Fragility” by Robin DiAngelo, is a book used to manipulate well-meaning white liberals into attending expensive seminars that reinforce specific language on racism. The NEA clearly has a far-left agenda and puts the interests of children last. This was evident during the pandemic when they prioritized keeping schools closed, even if it disproportionately affected underprivileged students. Now, they have shifted their focus to waging a culture war against families.

The NEA is not interested in educating children; their goal is to indoctrinate them. They aren’t trying to hide this agenda, parents just need to recognize it and take action. It is essential to challenge the influence of the union.
