Biden Holds Meeting with King Charles III at Windsor Castle

CNN recently reported that President Joe Biden met with King Charles III at Windsor Castle, marking their first meeting since the King’s coronation. The meeting was filled with the grandeur and ceremony one would expect from a royal encounter. Biden was welcomed by an honor guard formed by the Prince of Wales Company of the Welsh Guards, complete with uniformed troops and a military band.

As the King arrived, the band played “God Save the King,” and upon Biden’s entrance, they played “The Star-Spangled Banner.” This was Biden’s second visit to Windsor Castle since taking office, having previously met with Queen Elizabeth II at her home in June 2021. Throughout her reign, the Queen had met with 12 US presidents, excluding President Lyndon Johnson. During their meeting, the Queen expressed interest in Biden’s upcoming meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The meeting between Biden and King Charles was significant, as it showcased how the King balances his apolitical role with his passionate commitment to addressing climate change. Biden has called climate change “the existential threat to human existence as we know it.” The meeting also drew attention to the interaction between the two men. At one point, Biden placed his hand on King Charles’ back, which, according to a royal source, symbolized warmth and affection and did not break protocol.

Biden, King Charles, and special climate envoy John Kerry also met with leaders from the private sector at a climate event. They discussed barriers to private investment and emphasized the need to accelerate the deployment of capital in the new energy economy. Biden was particularly interested in exploring how the insurance industry could provide coverage for specific types of investments. They also discussed the importance of multilateral development banks and corporations working together to minimize investment risks.

Biden’s visit to London began with a meeting with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at 10 Downing Street. They discussed various topics, including the situation in Ukraine, on which the two leaders have closely coordinated. Biden expressed his appreciation for the strong alliance between the US and the UK, and Sunak emphasized their joint economic security and commitment to the NATO alliance.

The meeting took place shortly after the US announced its decision to send cluster munitions to Ukraine, a topic on which the US and the UK have differing positions. However, both leaders remained united in their support for Ukraine against Russia’s aggression.

After the meeting with Sunak, Biden traveled to Vilnius, Lithuania for the NATO Summit, where leaders gathered to address the ongoing crisis in Ukraine and the failed coup attempt in Russia. The summit was critical for maintaining global stability and strengthening the unity of the alliance.

From there, Biden will continue his travels and head to Helsinki, Finland for other important meetings.
