The cost of frozen vegetarian burgers has risen faster than inflation, with a four-pack now priced at £2.34, representing a 33.7% increase over the past five years. Prawns, priced at £2.72 per 150g, have also experienced an 11.9% price hike since May. Additionally, peppers used for barbecue skewers have become 14.3% more expensive compared to 2018.

The rising cost of burger toppings is another factor contributing to the increasing cost of barbecues. High feed prices and the impact of bird flu have led to a surge in egg prices, resulting in a 43.4% increase in mayonnaise prices over the past five years. A jar of mayonnaise that cost £1.51 in 2018 now costs £2.18. Cheese prices have also rapidly increased over the past year, experiencing a 40.3% rise since 2018. Moreover, a pack of six bread rolls now costs over £1.

Even a simple treat like ice cream has become more expensive. Tubs of ice cream between 450ml and a litre averaged at £3.16 at the beginning of May, which is 72p higher than the same month last year.
