The History of Princess Diana’s Sheep Sweater as Shared by its Designers

  • The iconic sheep sweater worn by Princess Diana will be up for auction this fall.
  • In an email to Insider, the designers revealed they had thought they accidentally gave it away many years ago.
  • The founders of Warm & Wonderful, the brand behind the sweater, expressed relief that it hadn’t been damaged by moths.

The highly sought-after sheep sweater embraced by Princess Diana will finally hit the auction block this fall. However, its whereabouts remained a mystery until recently.

Sally Muir and Joanna Osborne, the creators of the sweater and founders of Warm & Wonderful, believed they had inadvertently given it away many years ago. They shared in an email to Insider, “We thought we had likely sent it out as part of an order, as we constantly struggled to meet the demand due to Princess Diana’s influence. We never imagined we still had it, so we didn’t actively search for it.”

According to Sotheby’s press release, the original red sweater was damaged by Princess Diana and returned to Warm & Wonderful mere weeks after she first wore it to a polo match in 1981.

At the time, Princess Diana requested a repair or replacement, prompting the designers to create a new one that she wore to another polo match in 1983.

The original sweater remained in the possession of Muir and Osborne, and it remained lost until a few months ago when they stumbled upon it while searching for a sewing pattern in their attic. The designers expressed their surprise and disbelief at finding it.

In their email to Insider, they wrote, “With the mended cuff, it was evident that it was the original sweater. We were also immensely relieved that it hadn’t been damaged by moths.”

The sweater has had an “extraordinary” impact on the lives of Muir and Osborne, but they now believe it’s time to part ways with the original piece.

“We no longer want the responsibility of keeping it, so it’s time to pass it on to someone who can ensure its safekeeping,” they stated.

The auction for the sweater will commence on August 31 and run until September 14. Sotheby’s anticipates a listing price ranging from $50,000 to $80,000.
