The Experience of Attending as an Average Individual

My inaugural experience at Paris Fashion Week was a thrilling adventure that demanded both determination and a keen sense of fashion. As one of the prestigious “Big Four” fashion weeks, alongside New York, Milan, and London, it attracts emerging designers vying for the chance to showcase their latest creations. While women’s fashion dominates the February and September shows, I had the opportunity to witness the men’s fashion lineup from June 20 to 25.

Paris Fashion Week can be overwhelming, with back-to-back shows and events scattered throughout the city. To ensure I looked the part and exuded a heightened sense of personal style, I meticulously planned all my outfits in advance. However, it’s important to consider the need for mobility, as you may find yourself chasing after cars and running for trains. Comfortable attire is key.

Exhaustion is par for the course during this week-long celebration of men’s fashion, as one strives to attend every show and event. However, the experiences are beyond compare. The festivities kicked off in grand style with a captivating show by Louis Vuitton, hosted at Pont Neuf, the oldest bridge in Paris. Under the creative direction of Pharrell Williams, the brand wowed the audience with colorful trunks and suits depicting iconic Parisian landmarks. The show took full advantage of the picturesque sunset, and the models graced the yellow carpet in nature-inspired ensembles. Williams and Jay-Z even surprised everyone with a live performance, attracting a crowd of hundreds.

Each brand carefully curated its venue to match the elegance and uniqueness of its designs. The cobblestone square at Monnaie de Paris served as the perfect backdrop for newcomer brand Wales Bonner’s “Marathon” collection. The models paraded the runway adorned in colors that paid homage to the designer’s Jamaican-British heritage. I had the privilege of sitting in the front row at these designated museum venues, immersing myself in the awe-inspiring ambience.

Rhude’s “Dream Within a Dream” showcase unfolded in the enchanting gardens of Musée Nissim de Camondo, a historic house and museum. The monochromatic looks perfectly complemented the industrial vibe, featuring layered suits, intricate waistlines, and sleek gel wigs. However, the most unconventional presentation I witnessed took place at the Théatre de l’Odéon. In a theatrical fashion show, KidSuper, the temporary designer of Louis Vuitton’s off-season collection, brought whimsicality and fantasy to life. Lead designer Colm Dillane embarked on a thought-provoking journey, inviting meta conversations and displaying striking fashion ensembles.

Apart from the fashion shows, the allure of Paris Fashion Week extends to the pop-up events and parties that dot the city. Isabel Marant, a Paris-based brand, welcomed guests to its showroom for an exclusive preview and discussion of its upcoming collection. Other brands orchestrated lavish parties at various venues. These gatherings provided a networking platform for designers while fostering an atmosphere of celebration.

Paris Fashion Week parties can become crowded, and early arrival is crucial to secure entry. The popularity and success of a brand often determine the limited space available for showcase events. Additionally, numerous major brands organize pop-up events throughout the week. Saucony, the athletic-shoe brand, captivated attendees with an art installation displaying their latest colorways for 2024.

One of the highlights of the week was Pharrell Williams’ collaboration with Colette founder Sarah Andelman. Together, they presented the remarkable Joopiter live auction, paying homage to Williams’ close friendships and innovative artistic minds. The auction featured bionic sculptures by Hajime Sorayama, neon flower art from Takashi Murakami, and vintage DJ units, among other eclectic items.

Amidst the whirlwind of events, Paris itself emerges as a work of art. The city’s natural landscape and historical treasures serve as the perfect backdrop for Paris Fashion Week. As I reflect on my inaugural experience, I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of a global audience that shares a deep passion for art and fashion. Paris truly breathes life into the world of fashion, leaving an indelible impression.
