A Taste of Kawaii in NYC: Experience Psychedelic Conveyor Belt Sushi

Indulging in a fish feast has never been quite as enchanting, visually captivating, or artistically presented as it is at Sushidelic. This Wednesday marks the grand opening of Manhattan’s sole conveyor belt sushi restaurant (the only other one in NYC can be found in Flushing). Diners will be treated to a culinary experience that has already become a sensation on TikTok, thanks to its extraordinary food-moving contraption.

Sushidelic is the brainchild of Japanese artist Sebastian Masuda, affectionately known as the godfather of kawaii culture. Masuda made a name for himself by erecting a massive nine-foot Hello Kitty statue in Midtown and launching the beloved but now-closed Kawaii Monster Café. This time, Masuda has tailored the concept to suit the tastes of New Yorkers, offering a fusion of Harajuku, Japan and Soho.

Masuda explains that his “new-generation sushi restaurant” would not find success in Tokyo, given the city’s more conservative nature. But for the residents of Manhattan, Sushidelic provides an opportunity to immerse themselves in the adorable aesthetics of kawaii culture without sacrificing flavor. The restaurant offers a unique six-course omakase experience priced at $85, a departure from the city’s typical set-menu dining options. Guests can expect dishes such as pink rice and macarons, a chirashi parfait accompanied by a soy sauce syringe, an imported matcha IPA, and a vibrant paint palette of dyed dips. These artistic culinary delights are served beneath three enormous rotating resin cats, surrounded by an assortment of sculptural platings, including button-eyed teddy bears and glossy red stilettos.

Sushidelic will be open from Tuesday to Saturday, 5 P.M. to 11 P.M. In the near future, the restaurant plans to introduce an à la carte menu, offer takeaway “sushi candy” through conveniently located kiosks, adorn its walls with more art, and provide Masuda merchandise. These additions will undoubtedly enhance the already fantastical dining experience, making Sushidelic a truly immersive and visually stunning establishment. The staff is currently working on implementing a name card system to ensure customers can easily identify their orders when they arrive. In the meantime, costumed staff members graciously serve most of the courses, especially for those not seated at the 18-seat counter.
