Aug. 1 (UPI) — The British Government has formally recognized the Yazidi Genocide committed by ISIS in 2014.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Tuesday that the designation was based on the German Federal Court of Justice’s recent conviction of a former ISIS fighter for acts of genocide. The British government believes that genocide designations should be made by “competent courts” rather than governments or non-judicial bodies.

“Today, we have taken the historic step of acknowledging that acts of genocide were committed against the Yazidi people. This decision demonstrates our unwavering commitment to ensuring that they receive the compensation they deserve and have access to meaningful justice,” stated British Minister of State for the Middle East Tariq Mahmood Ahmad.

In addition to recognizing the genocide against the Yazidi people, Britain acknowledges other acts of genocide such as the Holocaust, Rwanda, Srebrenica, and Cambodia.

In 2016, a U.N. panel confirmed that ISIS had committed acts of genocide against the Yazidi people in Syria, including horrific abuses against men, women, and children that constituted crimes against humanity and war crimes.

By making this acknowledgment, Britain aims to commemorate the ninth anniversary of the genocide and pledges to “actively contribute to the eradication of ISIS” by rebuilding affected communities and leading global efforts against its extremist propaganda.

“The Yazidi population suffered immensely at the hands of Daesh nine years ago, and the effects are still being felt today,” Ahamad said, referring to ISIS by an alternative name. “Justice and accountability are essential for those whose lives have been shattered.”
