Texas Migrants Arrive at LA Union Station

Mirroring recent actions taken by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a group of immigrants were transported via bus from the Texas border area to Los Angeles and dropped off at downtown’s Union Station on Wednesday, as confirmed by Texas Governor Greg Abbott.

“Texas’ small border towns continue to be overwhelmed and overrun by the thousands of people crossing into Texas from Mexico illegally due to President Biden’s failure to secure the border,” stated Abbott.

“Los Angeles is a major city that migrants aspire to go to, especially now that its city leaders have declared it a sanctuary city. Our border communities are at the forefront of President Biden’s border crisis, and Texas will continue to provide much-needed relief until he steps up and secures the border.”

Last week, the Los Angeles City Council approved a motion directing various city departments to take the necessary steps for Los Angeles to officially become a sanctuary city for immigrants.

Around 40 immigrants, including children, were dropped off in Los Angeles on Wednesday. It remains unknown if more buses are on their way.

Mayor Karen Bass issued a statement condemning the use of human beings as pawns in “cheap political games” by an elected American official.

“After assuming office, I instructed city departments to start planning in the event Los Angeles became the target of a despicable stunt, a tactic often employed by Republican governors,” said Bass.

“We were not caught off guard, nor will we be intimidated. Now, it is time to execute our plan. Our emergency management, police, fire, and other departments were already mobilized, along with nonprofit partners, before the arrival of the bus.”

“Los Angeles is a city driven by compassion and respect, and we will not be influenced by petty politicians toying with human lives. We strive to treat all people with dignity and compassion, and we will continue to work closely with nonprofit organizations, such as the L.A. Welcomes Collective, as well as our county, state, and federal partners.”

“In everything we do, we will stand united and lead. The wellbeing of people will always take priority over politics.”

Daniel Lopez, Deputy Communications Director for Governor Gavin Newsom, emphasized that despite being a border state, California focuses on collaborating with local communities to support and humanely welcome asylum seekers, rather than demonizing them.

“Regarding the recently arrived families, the state is in close communication with the county and city of Los Angeles, as well as our community partners. Together, we will ensure the safety and welcoming of the children and families who have arrived,” Lopez added.

The immigrants were taken to St. Anthony’s Croatian Catholic Church in Chinatown, where the Los Angeles Fire Department assessed their medical conditions. Representatives from the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights also offered assistance to the immigrants, who had been on the bus for nearly 24 hours.

Earlier in the day, California Attorney General Rob Bonta stated that his office had sent public records requests to Governor DeSantis’ office and the Florida Division of Emergency Management, seeking information about the recent transportation of two groups of immigrants from Florida to Northern California.

Bonta declared that his office is investigating whether Florida violated any laws when shipping dozens of migrants to Sacramento. Governor Gavin Newsom suggested that DeSantis could face potential kidnapping charges for the transportation of migrants to California, although Florida officials maintain that the migrants willingly went to Florida and signed documents agreeing to the travel.

As of now, there has been no response from Newsom or Bonta regarding the Texas migrants transported to Los Angeles.

According to Governor Abbott’s office, Texas has been arranging buses to transport migrants from Texas to various locations, including Washington, D.C., New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, and recently, Denver. Since the start of the busing effort last spring, over 21,600 migrants have been sent from Texas to these “self-declared sanctuary cities,” according to Abbott’s office.
