Texas Governor, Greg Abbott, Declares Resistance to DOJ Directives Regarding Floating Border Wall

Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) has taken a firm stance in his letter to the Biden administration, expressing his intention to continue using a floating wall along the southern border of the state. This comes despite the recent warning from the Justice Department that they are suing him for deploying the barricade.

In his letter, Governor Abbott asserts that he is within his constitutional rights to address what he calls an “unprecedented crisis of illegal immigration” caused by President Biden’s border policies. He argues that enforcing the existing immigration laws would alleviate the record-breaking level of illegal immigration plaguing America.

The Department of Justice proceeded with its lawsuit against Texas on Monday. Alongside the letter, Governor Abbott defends the miles-long buoy barricades constructed in the Rio Grande earlier this month.

While it is true that U.S. border officials have been apprehending a high number of migrants in recent years, crossings have experienced a lull in activity for several months. Experts attribute this to potential migrants waiting to see how U.S. border policies develop and taking advantage of newly available legal avenues to seek asylum.

Governor Abbott claims that his floating barricade serves to protect both migrants and U.S. citizens. He urges the Biden administration to enforce federal immigration laws to prevent migrants from risking their lives in the treacherous waters of the Rio Grande River. Additionally, he argues that stronger enforcement would help combat drug trafficking, cartel violence, and human trafficking.

Contrary to Governor Abbott’s claims, recent data indicates that nearly 90% of convicted fentanyl traffickers are U.S. citizens, and only 0.02% of migrants arrested for illegal crossings carry any fentanyl.

The letter from Governor Abbott is a response to the notice sent by the DOJ, which disclosed their plan to sue Texas for the deployment of what they deem an “unlawful construction of a floating barrier” that interferes with the federal government’s responsibilities under the Rivers and Harbors Act.
