A group of Girl Scouts camping in Texas had a frightening experience when an alligator joined them in the lake they were swimming in.

The incident, captured on video and obtained by local outlet KPRC 2, occurred at Lake Raven in Huntsville State Park, north of Houston.

Troop leader Nichole Glenn recounted that while she was taking a photo of her daughter and another girl in the water, she noticed an object that turned out to be an alligator.

Glenn quickly took action, instructing the girls to get out of the water. However, some of the girls on the dock started diving into the water without knowing the reason for the commotion.

The video shows the alligator approaching the girls who are screaming and trying to get out of the lake. One of the girls, Erin White, jumps into the water, unaware of the danger. She later realized her friends were leaving her behind, thinking they were just playing a game.

Glenn positioned herself between the alligator and the girls, willing to sacrifice herself to ensure their safety. As they swam to shore, other people joined in and splashed to scare the alligator away.

The alligator, nicknamed “Karen” by the Girl Scouts, was around 14 feet long. Despite the terrifying experience, Glenn reflects on her survival after battling cancer and vows never to swim in a lake again.

The girls are doing well following the incident and are even excited to be interviewed by the news. While alligator attacks are rare, precautions should be taken when encountering them.

According to a wildlife expert, in the event of an alligator charge, it is best to run away in a straight line rather than zigzagging and not to play dead.
