Ten Years Ago, Man Found Guilty of Street Ambush Murder of San Jacinto Resident

A man responsible for a deadly ambush-style revenge attack on a San Jacinto motorist ten years ago has been convicted of first-degree murder and other charges. A jury in Murrieta deliberated for just a few hours before finding Abram Daniel Palacios, 35, guilty of the 2013 killing of 23-year-old Ivan Ibarra Carrillo. In addition to the murder charge, Palacios was convicted of a special circumstance allegation of lying in wait, as well as sentence-enhancing gun and great bodily injury allegations.

Riverside County Superior Court Judge F. Paul Dickerson has scheduled a sentencing hearing for July 28 at the Southwest Justice Center. Palacios is currently being held without bail at the nearby Byrd Detention Center. His half-brother, Juan Javier Mejia, was also convicted in 2016 and sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Court documents reveal that Palacios sought revenge against Carrillo because he believed Carrillo had orchestrated a home invasion robbery at his girlfriend’s house in October 2012. The prosecution argued that Palacios had been searching for Carrillo for weeks. Mejia volunteered to be the hit man and later admitted to sheriff’s investigators that he had control of both handguns used in the killing.

In June 2013, Palacios discovered that Carrillo was in his neighborhood, near the intersection of Las Rosas Drive and Osprey Street. Palacios and Mejia drove in Palacios’ girlfriend’s Honda Accord in search of Carrillo’s Ford Excursion. They quickly found the SUV on Las Rosas and Palacios intentionally blocked its path, forcing Carrillo to brake. Mejia got out of the car and fired 14 rounds from a .40 caliber pistol, hitting Carrillo multiple times. When Palacios ran out of bullets, he retrieved a 9mm handgun and fired two more shots at Carrillo’s face and head.

Carrillo died at the scene, and Palacios later confessed to his girlfriend about the murder. Detectives located Mejia’s ex-wife and children two weeks later, and Mejia was eventually captured in Mexico City in 2015 after being on the run for over 18 months. Palacios also hid in Mexico but was arrested in Los Angeles in 2019 without incident.

Prior to this conviction, Palacios had previous misdemeanor convictions for illegal possession of a controlled substance, making criminal threats, and domestic abuse.
