Teen Arrested After Iconic ‘Sycamore Gap Tree’ in the U.K. is Vandalized

Sept. 28 (UPI) — Witness the magnificent sight of a sycamore tree thriving beside the ancient Hadrian’s Wall in northern England for almost 300 years.

But in a single night, this majestic symbol of history and nature was ruthlessly and intentionally brought down.

News has emerged that a 16-year-old boy has been apprehended in connection with the felling of the renowned “Sycamore Gap tree.”

Known to many as the “Robin Hood tree,” it starred prominently in the 1991 Kevin Costner film “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.”

In a statement released on Thursday, officials from the Northumberland National Park have confirmed that the iconic Sycamore Gap tree was intentionally toppled.

“The Northumberland National Park Authority deeply regrets to announce that the world-famous tree at Sycamore Gap has fallen overnight,” expressed park officials. “Our investigations indicate that this act was executed purposefully.”

The park is actively collaborating with law enforcement agencies and pledged to unveil more information in due course.

A post on X by the Northumbria Police reveals their belief that this act of destruction was an “intentional act of vandalism.” The unnamed suspect is now under arrest.

Until the authorities establish the full circumstances surrounding this tragic event, the park urges visitors to refrain from visiting the area, for the sake of their safety and to preserve the sanctity of the location, cherished by nature enthusiasts worldwide.

“My emotions are running wild in the face of such mindless vandalism inflicted upon the tree at #SycamoreGap,” expressed Jamie Driscoll, Mayor of the North of Tyne, on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. “This is a place of remembrance, a witness to countless proposals, and a cherished spot for family picnics. It holds a special place in our collective consciousness.”

“We are determined to ensure that those responsible face the consequences,” he pledged.

Sycamore Gap, honored with the title of English Tree of the Year in 2016 by the Woodland Trust, is celebrated on the park’s website for its marvel and significance.
