The U.K.’s air traffic control provider faced a technical glitch on Monday, causing disruptions to flights across the country.
“We are currently encountering a technical issue and have implemented traffic flow restrictions to ensure safety,” stated NATS. “Our engineers are diligently working to identify and resolve the problem.”
NATS emphasized that “UK airspace remains open” despite speculations on X, formerly known as Twitter.
No further details were provided regarding the nature of the issue or the specific flight restrictions in place.
Gatwick Airport, London’s second-largest airport, expressed the likelihood of delays and flight cancellations, while Luton Airport confirmed the disruption to flights due to the air traffic control issue affecting UK airspace.
Stansted Airport acknowledged the nationwide air traffic control issue affecting flights across the country.
Edinburgh Airport advised passengers to check the status of their flights with their respective airlines before coming to the airport.
The air traffic control issue was initially announced by Scottish airline Loganair, which reported a network-wide failure of UK air traffic control computer systems earlier in the morning.
Flight tracking website Flightradar24 shared a live air traffic data image on X at 12:35 p.m. London time.
In their statement, they noted significant limitations on departures, particularly at U.K. airports like Heathrow, while arrivals continue as scheduled. Interestingly, the majority of their tracked flights are currently London arrivals.
