Tech Manufacturers and Retailers Collaborate with White House to Introduce Cybersecurity ‘Trust Mark’ on Devices

The White House is set to introduce a new program aimed at educating Americans on the cybersecurity of their household devices and identifying those that are less susceptible to cyberattacks. To achieve this, internet and Bluetooth-connected devices like baby monitors, home security cameras, and refrigerators that meet U.S. government cybersecurity standards will be marked with a special identifier called a “trust mark.” These trust marks will be linked to a national registry of certified devices through QR codes on the products. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is also considering an annual recertification process for products and a means for consumers to receive updates on new product information.

Known as the “U.S. Cyber Trust Mark” program, it will be a collaborative effort between the White House, the FCC, and several prominent electronics and appliances manufacturers and retailers, including Amazon, Best Buy, Cisco Systems, Consumer Technology Association, Google, Qualcomm, and Samsung, among others. The program is expected to go live by late 2024, with marked products appearing in the marketplace soon after.

Prior to its implementation, the program will undergo a public comment period to establish the criteria for granting trust marks. Moreover, the administration is still addressing the issue of liability in case a company wrongly uses the trust mark on a product that does not meet the necessary security standards, as stated by senior administration officials.

To further solidify the initiative, the FCC is currently in the process of applying for a national trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office specifically for products that meet the cybersecurity criteria.

The rollout of this program aims to enhance cybersecurity awareness among American consumers and provide them with more secure options for their household devices.
