Taliban Directs Closure of Hair and Beauty Salons

Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers have imposed another restriction on the rights of women in the country. According to a report by the BBC, the Vice and Virtue Ministry has ordered the closure of women’s hair and beauty salons nationwide. Salon owners have been given a one-month deadline to wind down their businesses and provide a closure report. The ministry has not provided a reason for this order, but stated that the details would be revealed after the salons have shut down.

The ministry’s letter to the salons indicated that the order came from supreme leader Haibatullah Akhunzada, who recently claimed that the Taliban had restored the freedom and dignity of women. However, as reported by Al Jazeera, since regaining power in 2021, the Taliban has enforced bans on women’s education, restricted their access to public spaces, and limited their employment opportunities.

Speaking anonymously to the BBC, an Afghan woman expressed her shock and disappointment at the news, stating that the Taliban is systematically stripping away the most basic human rights of Afghan women. She highlighted the focus on women’s bodies and the Taliban’s efforts to eliminate women from public life at every level. The announcement of the salon ban has sparked outrage among rights groups, and the United Nations has pledged to work with Afghanistan’s government to reverse the ban. (In April, Afghanistan’s only women-run radio station was taken off the air.)
