Take Control Now: Avoid the Consequences of Inaction or Risk Getting Burned

A new United Nations report, essential for upcoming climate negotiations, emphasizes the urgent need for rapid and deep changes in energy and financial systems to address global warming. The report warns that the window of opportunity to secure a livable and sustainable future for all is rapidly closing. It states that global emissions of heat-trapping gases must be reduced by 43% by 2030, compared to 2019 levels, and by 60% by 2035. The report also emphasizes the necessity of phasing out unabated fossil fuels and internal combustion engines to achieve these goals.

The report further recommends changes in the way money flows, including the reduction of $450 billion in annual subsidies for coal, oil, and natural gas. It emphasizes the importance of halting and reversing deforestation and implementing better crop-growing practices. The report highlights that while 95% of deforestation occurs in the tropics, global consumers drive this tree loss. The upcoming international climate negotiations president, Sultan Al Jaber, calls for urgent action and a disruption of business as usual to achieve real results.

The report, known as the “global stocktake” on climate-fighting efforts, uses variations of the word “transform” more than 50 times in 47 pages to underscore the need for change. This report coincides with a meeting of leaders from the top 20 economies, responsible for 80% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, in India. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urges swift action on global warming, stating that “the climate crisis is worsening dramatically.” The world has already warmed by about 1.1 degrees Celsius since the mid-1800s.

The report emphasizes that the opportunity to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius is also rapidly closing. The World Meteorological Organization predicts a two-out-of-three chance that Earth will exceed this threshold for a year within the next five years. Climate Analytics CEO Bill Hare describes the report as a final warning, stating that if decisive action is not taken, the consequences will be severe. With the hottest summer on record and increasing ocean temperatures, urgent action is necessary to combat climate change.
