Taiwan’s Defense Ministry Spots 42 Chinese Military Aircraft Amid ‘Cautionary’ Alert Following Top Official’s Visit to the US

Taiwan’s defense ministry made a significant discovery on Saturday, detecting a total of 42 Chinese military aircraft during Chinese drills. Beijing referred to these drills as a “stern warning” against Taiwan’s alleged collusion with “separatists and foreign forces.” This incident occurred just days after Taiwanese Vice President William Lai’s short visit to the United States, with stops in New York City and San Francisco. China’s Communist Party strongly condemned these visits, claiming that Taiwan is China’s territory and should not engage in foreign relations.

In a tweet from the Taiwan Ministry of National Defense on the platform formerly known as Twitter, it was revealed that 26 out of the 42 Chinese military aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait. The defense ministry also detected eight Chinese military vessels.

To provide more context, an image of a Chinese warship sailing near the Taiwanese-controlled Matsu Islands was released. The Chinese warship was part of a military drill on April 8, as captured by Reuters’ Thomas Peter.

The tweet from the Taiwan Ministry of National Defense emphasized their vigilant monitoring of the situation using their ISR system. They have deployed CAP aircraft, naval vessels, and land-based missile systems in response.

CCTV, a Chinese state media network, reported that the military drill involved the use of fighter jets and missile-equipped boats to simulate the surrounding of Taiwan. Taiwan’s defense ministry criticized these drills as irrational and provocative. They assert that their military stands ready to counter any Chinese threats and has full confidence in safeguarding national security.

Xinhua, another Chinese state media outlet, quoted an anonymous official from China’s Taiwan Work Office. This official alleged that Lai’s trip to the United States was a new provocative move, highlighting collusion between Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party and the United States.

The Associated Press highlighted the statement made by the same unnamed official, calling Lai a “troublemaker who will push Taiwan to the dangerous brink of war.”
