Taiwan Implements Shutdown Measures as Typhoon Haikui Approaches

As Typhoon Haikui approached Taiwan, the government took precautions and suspended flights, rail transport, and ferry services. Classes and outdoor events were also canceled, and workers were urged to stay home. The typhoon made landfall on the east coast with strong winds and heavy rain, causing some damage and flooding in low-lying areas. Despite the storm, some shops remained open to sell locally grown fruits and vegetables that would otherwise go to waste.

Typhoon Saola also affected the region, with 900,000 people and 80,000 fishing vessels moved to safety along the Chinese coast. Hong Kong and parts of the mainland suspended business, transport, and classes as a precaution. However, damage was minimal, and most restrictions were lifted by Sunday. In Taiwan, several events were canceled, including a hot air balloon festival and outdoor concerts. National parks and treacherous mountain roads were also closed.

China experienced heavy rains and flooding in recent months, causing casualties and disruptions. Despite the storms, China’s military continued to conduct operations near Taiwan, but there were no indications of any crossing into Taiwanese territory.
