Sydney Sweeney is no stranger to the swirling rumors about her, and the star of “The White Lotus” admits that they can take a toll on her at times.
“Sometimes I feel worn down by it,” says the 25-year-old Sweeney in a cover story interview with Variety. “It’s hard to sit back and watch without being able to defend yourself.”
Sweeney, best known for her role as the flirtatious drama-starter Cassie Howard in the hit series “Euphoria,” has been the subject of gossip in recent months.
From rumors about her family’s political beliefs to allegations of an affair with her “Anyone but You” co-star Glen Powell, the internet has been buzzing about her.
Sweeney faced criticism on social media last year after hosting a birthday party for her mother, where some guests were seen wearing “Blue Lives Matter” clothing and MAGA-style merchandise.
In an interview with British GQ, Sweeney described how the backlash quickly spread like a wildfire after Twitter users condemned her for the event.
In her conversation with Variety, Sweeney clarified that the incident was filled with misinterpretations.
“There were so many misinterpretations. The people in the pictures weren’t even my family. The individuals who brought the items that upset people were actually my mom’s friends from L.A. who have children participating in Pride parades. They thought it would be funny to wear those items because they were coming to Idaho,” explains Sweeney.
Sweeney reflects on the rapid rise and fall of public opinion, stating, “People are quick to build someone up and then love tearing them down. It’s fascinating to see. Three years ago, I was just a regular college student like everyone else. And now, I no longer feel human.”
Regarding the rumors about Glen Powell, Sweeney, who is engaged to restaurateur Jonathan Davino, dismisses them, explaining that she and Powell find the situation amusing.
“We talk and laugh about it all the time,” she says. “That’s what people want! Glen and I don’t really care. We have a great time together, and we have a lot of respect for each other. He’s a hard worker, and I’m a hard worker.”
In the interview, Sweeney also reflects on how her own words may have contributed to the gossip, acknowledging the difficulty of conveying her opinions fully in brief interviews.
“When we have a two-hour conversation and only six quotes are used, it’s hard to provide the context behind what we’re discussing and how we’re saying it to each other,” she explains.
“Anyone but You” will be released in theaters on December 15.
