A massive rockfall narrowly avoided devastating the village of Brienz/Brinzauls in Switzerland. This village had previously been evacuated in May due to concerns about the safety of its residents. The incident occurred during the night, with a significant portion of the insel near Brienz/Brinzauls breaking off. Fortunately, the rockslide missed the village by a mere few meters, leaving a heap of debris on the main road near the schoolhouse. Local authorities, Albula/Alvra and Brienz/Brinzauls municipality, reported this close call on Twitter.

No damage has been observed in the village thus far, but the behavior of the surrounding rock masses is being closely monitored. The village, known for its 16th-century church, St. Calixtus, typically houses around 100 residents. Thankfully, the rockslide stopped just short of reaching the church, sparing the community from any significant harm. Christian Gartmann, spokesperson for the local community, emphasized the potential danger of rock splinters created during such incidents and their ability to cause damage to buildings.

Similar rockfall incidents have been linked to climate change, as the melting of snow has weakened certain mountain regions. Just recently, the peak of Fluchthorn mountain in Austria collapsed due to thawing permafrost. State geologist Thomas Figl attributed the incident to climate change and the gradual thawing of ice, which serves as the binding agent for mountains. While the rockslide in Brienz is believed to be a result of natural erosion rather than melting permafrost, it serves as a reminder of the environmental challenges faced by mountainous regions.
