The culprit has been identified as Jeffrey Norman Crum, a 61-year-old man who is currently serving two life sentences for a 2015 sexual battery and attempted murder conviction. State Attorney Bill Gladson has announced that prosecutors will seek the death penalty in the Odom case.

Crum has a troubling criminal history, including a robbery in 1981 and a sexual battery case in Hillsborough County in 1985. Nienhuis stated, “This is not someone who should be taken lightly. This is a bad guy who enjoyed violence.” The DNA evidence collected from Crum’s previous sexual battery case ultimately provided the breakthrough needed to charge him in Jennifer’s murder.
Nienhuis reflected on the tragedy, saying, “All of us, especially those of us in law enforcement, can think of Jennifer as our sister, our niece, our granddaughter and realize, man, this is a tragedy beyond tragedy.” The justice served in this case brings some closure to the community and provides hope for other unsolved cases.
