Surge in Voter Demands: Gallup Discovers Record Number of Individuals Committed to Voting Solely for Candidates Sharing Their Abortion Stance

A recent poll conducted by Gallup, which was released on Wednesday, reveals a growing trend among voters regarding their stance on abortion. The poll indicates that a record high number of voters, 28 percent, now say they will only support a candidate who aligns with their personal opinion on abortion. This increase of one percentage point from last year’s poll highlights the increasing significance of the issue for voters, particularly in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Roe v. Wade ruling one year ago.

Additionally, 56 percent of respondents stated that while abortion views do matter to them, they are just one factor they consider when selecting a candidate. Although this represents only a two-point increase from the 2022 poll, it is notably higher than the averages from polls conducted prior to the Supreme Court’s decision to change abortion law with the Dobbs case in June 2022.

Furthermore, the Gallup poll also indicates a record low in the percentage of voters who claim not to care about a candidate’s position on abortion, with only 14 percent expressing indifference. In comparison, this figure stood at 23 percent in 2007.

Notably, nearly two-thirds of those voters who consider abortion to be their top-priority issue express support for abortion rights. This signifies a significant shift from previous years, where the majority of voters who prioritized abortion were opposed to abortion rights.

“The diminished pro-life segment of the electorate is less motivated on the issue than in the past, suggesting that the desire for changes in abortion laws is more influential for voters than preserving the current laws,” explained Lydia Saad, the Director of Social Research at Gallup.

Saad further noted that this may explain the failure of ballot measures in various states last year aimed at establishing abortion bans in state constitutions, particularly in conservative-leaning states like Kentucky and Kansas.

In the 2022 midterms, abortion played a crucial role in helping the Democrats maintain their Senate majority. Although the Democrats lost their majority in the House, they fared better than anticipated for a typical midterm election for the president’s party. Abortion was also a significant factor in House elections.

The 2022 poll was conducted following the leak of a draft of the Dobbs decision. The 2023 poll, which surveyed a random sample of 1,011 adults in May, has a margin of error of four percent.
