Supreme Court ruling on affirmative action rights a significant injustice

Thursday’s Supreme Court rulings on affirmative action in college admissions and workplace religious freedom are a triumphant reaffirmation of our nation’s fundamental values. Elite universities, both public and private, such as the University of North Carolina and Harvard, have long used race as a crucial criterion for admissions. This is supposedly done to promote diversity and address past injustices. However, the reality is that Asian American students, despite having superior grades and test scores, have been unfairly denied admission. This mirrors the discrimination faced by Jewish students in the early 20th century.

What is even more concerning is that there is no evidence to suggest that this injustice has actually served any beneficial purpose. While it may have superficially increased diversity, it has also resulted in unprepared students being placed in high-pressure learning environments. This leads to a phenomenon known as “mismatch,” where these students struggle to succeed in more rigorous disciplines. Ironically, those who blame this issue on racism fail to acknowledge their own biases.

Chief Justice John Roberts pointed out that eliminating racial discrimination means eliminating it entirely. Universities cannot rely on application essays or similar methods to establish an unlawful regime. Instead, an individual’s identity should be based on their accomplishments, skills, and lessons learned, rather than the color of their skin. This is a principle deeply ingrained in our constitutional history.

Furthermore, the Supreme Court ruling in favor of Gerald Groff, the USPS mail carrier with religious objections to working on Sundays, is a significant victory for individuals of all faiths. Groff’s request for accommodation was rejected by his superiors, leading to disciplinary action. However, the court recognized that his employer could easily accommodate his religious beliefs without any undue hardship. This decision supports the freedom of religion, a core principle of our nation, and offers protection to those whose duties clash with their faith.

These rulings represent a significant step toward liberty and genuine equality, in contrast to the superficial equality pursued by progressives.
