The Mediterranean diet, renowned for its health benefits due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, has been found to potentially extend the lives of individuals in the UK by adopting other Mediterranean habits. A study conducted by researchers involved questioning 110,799 individuals in the age range of 40 to 75 about their diet and lifestyle choices.

Living a Mediterranean lifestyle, which was defined as getting six to eight hours of sleep, socializing with loved ones, avoiding excessive sedentary behavior, exercising regularly, participating in group sports, and incorporating naps, along with following the Mediterranean diet, consisting of an abundance of fruits, vegetables, seafood, and nuts while restricting salt intake, was associated with a 29 percent lower likelihood of premature death compared to those who did not adopt this lifestyle. Moreover, individuals who followed the Mediterranean lifestyle had a 28 percent lower risk of dying from cancer and were also less likely to suffer from cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Mercedes Sotos Prieto, the senior author of the study from the Autonomous University of Madrid and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, suggests that it is feasible for non-Mediterranean populations to adopt the Mediterranean diet by utilizing locally available products while incorporating the overall Mediterranean lifestyle. However, the study did not find a direct link between taking naps and a reduced risk of death, which may be due to UK individuals typically napping due to sleep deprivation or health issues.

In addition to diet and lifestyle choices, the study also considered factors such as socialization, consumption of healthy beverages like tea and coffee, avoidance of sugary drinks, limited snacking, and preference for whole-grain foods. Overall, embracing a Mediterranean lifestyle filled with good company, nutritious food, and ample rest has the potential to significantly decrease the likelihood of premature death by 29 percent, as indicated by this study’s findings.
