Nearly five billion people, accounting for over 60 percent of the global population, are actively using social media platforms, according to a recent study.

This represents a 3.7 percent increase from the previous year, as calculated by digital advisory firm Kepios in its latest quarterly report.

The number of social network users is approaching the number of internet users, which stands at 5.19 billion or 64.5 percent of the world population.

There are significant regional variations in social media usage. Only one out of eleven people in East and Central Africa use social media, while in India, the most populous country in the world, the figure is one out of three.
