Research reveals a significant increase in eating disorders and self-harming cases among teenage girls over the past three years.

Compared to March 2020, the number of 13-to-16-year-old girls with conditions like bulimia and anorexia has risen by 42%, with even higher rates observed among affluent communities.

Moreover, incidents of self-harm have increased by 32% during the same period, based on an analysis of GP records.

Experts point to various factors such as social isolation, anxiety caused by disrupted routines and education, and negative influences from social media as potential drivers of these concerning trends.

A research team comprising experts from the University of Manchester, Keele University, University of Exeter, and the mental health research charity The McPin Foundation conducted the study, analyzing anonymized GP health records from 1,881 general practices across the UK, covering over nine million patients.
