The study found that Levonorgestrel, sold as Levonelle in Britain or Plan B in the US, was 63% effective on its own but increased to 95% when taken with piroxicam, an anti-inflammatory drug. This research, published in The Lancet, suggests that doctors should consider prescribing piroxicam to women seeking emergency contraception. The trial involved 836 women who had taken the morning after pill within 72 hours of unprotected sex. The women were split into two groups, with one group given levonorgestrel and a placebo, while the other group received the morning after pill alongside 40mg of piroxicam. Follow-up appointments were conducted after the women’s next expected period to monitor pregnancy rates. Only one pregnancy occurred in the piroxicam group, compared to seven in the placebo group.
