Study finds that HGTV is encouraging homeowners to create dull home décor.

The concept of “home sweet home” may hold true, but modern design trends have caused many homes to become indistinguishable from one another. The influence of home-improvement media, such as popular magazines like Better Homes and Gardens or HGTV shows like “Fixer Upper,” has been so strong that homeowners are now decorating their spaces based on what would appeal to the masses. Unfortunately, this has resulted in a sense of unhappiness for many individuals.

According to a recent study co-authored by Annetta Grant, an associate professor of marketing at the Smith School of Business, people are becoming hyperaware of perceived flaws in their homes. They worry that others will enter their space and judge their choices harshly. The pressure to conform to popular tastes has led to anxiety and discomfort among homeowners.

Renovation shows often emphasize the importance of making choices that will please potential buyers in the future. The focus on creating spaces with broad appeal and high resale value has caused individuals to prioritize this over their own personal preferences. This results in an environment that feels detached and alien to those living in it.

The study involved 17 participants, most of whom expressed a desire to be perceived as intelligent homeowners who have invested wisely in their properties. They opted for safe, non-controversial design choices, avoiding uniqueness and individuality. One participant even shared that their bathroom received positive feedback because it resembled a hotel, indicating an appreciation for generic conformity.

In a world that values uniformity and mass appeal, homeowners are constantly reminded to consider the preferences of potential future buyers. However, this focus on pleasing others comes at the cost of personal expression and satisfaction. It’s important to strike a balance between creating a space that reflects your own taste and ensuring future marketability.
