Steven Soderbergh’s Crime Thriller ‘Full Circle’: Where the Stars Align

Steven Soderbergh’s latest crime miniseries, “Full Circle,” is a captivating and star-studded thriller that will surely resonate with fans of “Big Little Lies” and “Sharp Objects.” This taut series harkens back to the era before HBO expanded its streaming platform, offering a nostalgic yet fresh experience. Set to premiere on July 13 on Max and penned by the talented Ed Solomon (“Men in Black”), “Full Circle” introduces multiple sets of characters and plotlines that initially appear unrelated but ultimately intertwine.

One of the central narratives follows the Browne family, consisting of the affluent couple Derek (played by Timothy Olyphant) and Sam (played by Claire Danes), as well as their teenage son Jared (portrayed by Ethan Stoddard). Jared has a recurrent habit of misplacing his belongings, including his phone, and unbeknownst to his parents, he strikes up an online friendship with a boy named Nicky (played by Lucian Zanes) who is the same age. Meanwhile, Chef Jeff (played by Dennis Quaid), Sam’s father and a celebrity chef, commands their attention as they manage his international culinary empire and reputable brands.

In another storyline, we meet Ms. Mahabir (masterfully portrayed by CCH Pounder), a Guyanese crime boss overseeing a kidnapping plot driven by karmic justice. Complicating matters further is her hotheaded nephew, Aked (played by Jharrel Jerome from “When They See Us”). Harmony (brought to life by the talented Zazie Beetz from “Atlanta”), an unconventional US Postal Inspection Service agent struggling with personal issues, becomes entangled in the unfolding events. Her boss, Manny Broward (comedian Jim Gaffigan stepping into a dramatic role), adds another layer of intrigue to the series.

On the surface, the “Full Circle” story arc may seem bewildering, with numerous characters and plotlines to absorb, but as the series progresses, everything seamlessly intertwines. The initial ambiguity gradually gives way to a cohesive narrative, driven by the failed kidnapping attempt on Jared, orchestrated by Aked. The panic-stricken Browne family, including Jared’s parents and grandfather, must navigate the ensuing chaos. Dennis Quaid shines as the charismatic celebrity chef, while CCH Pounder captivates as the enigmatic crime boss.

“Full Circle” beautifully weaves together the lives of the wealthy and famous, street-level hustlers, and criminals against the vibrant backdrop of New York City. Authenticity oozes from every scene, with the series forgoing the typical stand-in locations for genuine shots of the Big Apple. The writing strikes a delicate balance, infusing the story with levity without taking itself too seriously. The A-list cast delivers the performances fans have come to expect, with each character harboring their own allure instead of conforming to generic archetypes.

While “Full Circle” isn’t flawless, occasionally becoming convoluted and meandering, it remains captivating with consistent tension and a mature storyline that respects its audience. Clocking in at just six episodes, it doesn’t overstay its welcome. The advent of Max had many questioning if HBO would still produce the distinctive, thoughtfully curated series they were known for or pivot towards more mainstream content. “Full Circle” proudly stands as a testament to the former, harkening back to the classic HBO crime series of old.
